Geographies of Platformization

Our current economy can be understood as a “platform economy”, with economic and social interactions increasingly taking place via online platforms ranging from e-commerce, social media, games, video, cryptocurrency, gig economy, and sharing economy. While the dominance of platforms appears beyond doubt, our theoretical and empirical understanding remains limited as platforms transgress established governance modes, territorial boundaries, and legal frameworks. What is more, while European policymakers embrace the notion of the “twin transition”, ongoing platformization may also be at odds with sustainable development. In his talk, Koen Frenken will go into recent theoretical developments depicting platforms as a new organizational form that cannot be reduced to a (combination of) markets, hierarchies and networks. Taking this view as a starting point, he will reflect on the geography of the platform economy as it has taken shape over the past few decades, and he will articulate some of questions for future research in regional science and economic geography.
