Description
The Socioeconomic Research Institute of Piedmont (Ires Piemonte) was founded in 1958 by the Union of the Provinces of Piedmont and the Municipality of Turin. In 1991, the regional law n. 43 established IRES as a regional public body, with the mission of supporting programming activities and territorial planning policies.

The Piedmont Region is the main source of funding.

The Institute has fewer than 100 employees and is managed by a Board of Directors, appointed by the Piedmont Regional Council, which chooses the Director and appoints the Scientific Committee, whose members are scientists or academic professors.

The study and research activities are based on a three-year and annual program, approved by the regional government.

Ires research addresses socio-economic, evaluation, spatial and environmental issues.

The focus of IRES activities is in the area of ​​Regional Sciences, thus embracing disciplines such as Social Analysis, Economic Geography, Economics, Political Science, Environmental Analysis, Transport and Systems Analysis.

The institutional tasks concern the following main activities:

  • monitoring of the main socio-economic trends of the Region;
  • provide territorial and sector studies;
  • production of the annual report on the socio-economic and territorial situation of the Region;
  • support the Piedmont Region and the public administration in policies;
  • respond to the knowledge and competence needs of local authorities;
  • disseminate the results of scientific research.
